Probiotic Rituals

Hosting microbial rituals to engage with neglected gardens in Belgrade

Probiotic Rituals

Probiotic Rituals asks that you magnify the hidden world of microorganisms in your home and start a dialogue with the species too small to see. A process of learning, these rituals and stories seek to create relationships around interactions we are all too unaware of.

Soil Care

The first ritual is one of feeding the soil. We transplant microbial activity to depleted pockets of earth in the city, to stimulate the life we all need to be surrounded by. Pushed by narratives from the microscopic world and equipped with shovels, trowels and compost, groups of people fracture solidified soil and feed it with mulch. Over time, this can turn the urban soil into a reservoir of growth and diversity, ready to absorb water and to become a measure of the health and diversity of the city environment. The participants should be invited from the local area through people who shape opinions: teachers, policy makers or community leaders.

At Home

As many of us had the opportunity to slow down and spend more time at home, this work was developed as an online and in-home extension of Probiotic Rituals: Soil Care responding to the COVID-19 lockdown. It asks that you magnify the hidden world of microorganisms in your home and start a dialogue with the species too small to see. Fermented foods, composting waste and the nourishing of soil biodiversity ask us to care for and work with microbial partners.
